Percentage Basics

How Does Percentage Work?

100% Whole

A percentage represents a value out of 100. For example, 25% means 25 out of every 100.

Percentages make it easier to compare values even when the original numbers are different.

They are commonly used for marks, interest rates, discounts, salary changes, taxes and financial returns.

Percentage Tip

Percentage increase and decrease are calculated relative to the original value. Increasing a number by a certain percentage and then decreasing the result by the same percentage does not normally return to the original value.
